In Too Deep

Michelle:
I wanted to see this movie for two reasons: I wanted to see how it compared to Laurence Fishburne in Deep Cover, and I wanted to see how LL Cool J fared as a movie actor since I'd only known him as a rapper.  Omar Epps rather convincingly played the undercover cop.  At times I found it difficult to distinguish whether he was the cop playing his thug role or whether he actually believed he was a thug.  A few times in the movie the Epps character, Jeff Cole, said things which led you to believe he was in so deep that he had forgotten who he really was.

While both movies have a similar title and basically the same premise,  In Too Deep wasn't a remake of Deep Cover.  Fishburne really forgot who he was and totally forgot that he was a cop.  He became the person he was pretending to be.  Epps, on the other hand, stayed a bit more grounded in reality because of his weekly contact with the outside world and his relationship with Nia Long.

I wasn't disappointed by LL Cool J.

Dan:
I didn't want to see the movie.  Like I need to see another 'Gangsta' movie.  But I basically agree with you that Mr. Epps did a great acting job as Jeff Cole, the cop and J Reid, the gangster.  The movie was held together by the underlying plot of a superbad gangster, God, played by LL Cool J (would that be Mr. J?) trying to be a normal person and Jeff Cole, trying to be a bad guy.  Both of them suffered from delusions, pointing to the reality that though we often believe we've become what fantasies have led us to believe, there is an inner self that brings us back.  In Too Deep did a masterful job of mixing up the psychologies of both characters to make this point.  Omar Epps was masterful in letting the subtleness of this transformation come through.

I guess you could say I was transformed into a fan of this movie.

Michelle:
Before we went, I knew you didn't want to see In Too Deep, but I'm glad you enjoyed it and were able to get past the idea that it was just a Gangsta movie.
